London Youth Games
This weekend sees the finals of the London Youth Games, the culmination of a competition which has seen 31,000 children run, jump, lift and throw their little hearts out in the pursuit of glory.
Taking a brief break from lolling on street corners, back chatting their parents, texting and impregnating and stabbing each other, youngsters from across the capital’s thirty-three boroughs will converge on the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
Entrance to all events is free and even if no one you know is competing and you don’t want to lend your support to your borough, competition is always fierce and you may well see some stars of the future on display – Linford Christie, John Regis, Steve Backley, Ashley Cole, Ledley King, Christine Ohuruogu, Games patron Luol Deng, Tasha Danvers and Anne Keothavong are all former competitors.
The 2012 Olympics may come too soon for most of these stars of tomorrow, but you can be sure there will still be a few future Olympians on display.
If you don’t like athletics, the programme of events also includes many alternatives such as angling, football, basketball, rugby, swimming, tennis and weightlifting.
The Games runs over the entirety of the weekend, so if you like sport, are short of money and are looking for something to do why not join the expected crowd of 10,000 and see competitive sport in its purest form?
You never know, it might even inspire your kids to pry themselves off the sofa and actually do something.
